Mission girl Carly Rae Jepsen shares plenty with Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber didn’t call her maybe, he called her for certain.

Bieber phoned Carly Rae Jepsen in the middle of her Valentine’s Day appearance on MuchMusic to announce that she was signed to his manager’s record label, School Boy, in the U.S.

The song that got her signed to Scooter Braun’s School Boy is “Call Me Maybe,” that went to platinum and  No. 1 after its release last September and is on her new Curiosity EP, which came out also on Valentine’s Day through the Vancouver-based 604 Records.

Once he heard “Call Me Maybe,” Bieber declared it the “catchiest song ever” and told Braun that it was a smash. That was all Braun needed to hear.

Jepsen hails from Mission and has steadily built from her third place finish on the 2007 season of Canadian Idol. She won the Canadian Radio Awards in 2008 for her “Tug Of War,” the title track of her first album and has had two Juno nominations since. She’s also  worked fruitfully with producer Ryan Stewart and Marianas Trench’s Josh Ramsay, a co-writer of “Call Me Maybe,” which, indeed, is catchy pop-rock.

Currently on tour as the opening act for Hanson, Jepsen has something else in common with Bieber. She’s the first Canadian to have No. 1 single in the digital format since Biebs did it in 2010 with his “Baby.”
